Omani cuisine
Diverse cuisine reflects Oman's rich history and heritage
Omani cuisine has been influenced by many cultures such as Indian, Arabian, Persian, and African since it was built on trade routes.
Traditional Omani cuisine is characterized by its simplicity and use of local ingredients, such as fish, chicken and lamb, marinated with different spices and herbs and served with rice, soups and salads.
Some of the local Omani dishes are: Shuwa, a traditional Omani dish of slow-cooked, marinated lamb, camel or goat. The meat, once marinated, is wrapped in banana leaves, popped into a date palm bag and then placed into a deep fire pit in the ground. Another popular street food in Oman is Mishkak, which is grilled pieces of marinated meat, normally chicken or beef on long wooden sticks. Served hot with tamarind chutney.
When it comes to desserts, Omani halwa, which means sweet in Arabic, is the most famous traditional Omani dessert and is considered the national dessert of the country. It is is a soft, sweet gelatinous mixture flavored with saffron, cardamom, ghee, nuts and rose water.
Whether a resident or visitor, you haven’t experienced Oman until the moment you taste your first cup of kawha, Oman`s national drink. Kahwa is the Arabic word for coffee and Arabic coffee is unique not only in its taste but how it is prepared and served. Omani kahwa, served in small cups, uses spices and flavours to give a unique taste to the coffee. The main ingredients include saffron, rose water and cardamom, whilst some others also like to add cinnamon. The cup is lightly shaken when no more is wanted.
In addition, Oman is also known for its fruit juices and smoothies. Many Omani restaurants and cafes offer a variety of fresh fruit juices, including mango, pineapple, strawberry, apple etc. Some places even offer smoothies made with local fruits like khassab and tamarind.
Overall, Omani fruit drinks are a delicious and unique aspect of the country’s cuisine that should not be missed.
