Muscat

Muscat is the capital and most populated city in Oman. It lies on the northern coast between the sea, facing the Gulf of Oman, and inland mountains. About 28% of Oman's population lives in this city. Muscat offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Contrary to other Gulf countries, the construction of skyscrapers has been forbidden in order to preserve the stunning skyline. The light coloured buildings and minarets are in striking contrast with the surrounding mountains and reflect the light from the bay. The authorities' strict urban planning regulations make Muscat an attractive, very clean and uniform city.

Despite its booming economy, it has managed to maintain its cultural heritage which makes it a fascinating tourist destination. In addition, Muscat is renowned for being one of the cleanest and safest cities in the world.

Muscat showcases a distinctive blend of traditional Omani architecture with Islamic influences, creating an enchanting visual landscape.

Sohar

Sohar is Oman`s second largest city with 20% of the country's population. Sohar has become a strong commercial and industrial city following the 2014 transfer of commercial shipping activities from Port Sultan Qaboos (PSQ) in Muscat to Sohar Port.

Sohar is located in the Gulf of Oman and it is around 240 kilometers north of the capital city, Muscat, and a similar distance from Dubai, in the neighboring United Arab Emirates. It is commonly believed that Sohar is the birthplace of Sindbad the Sailor, therefore, the city celebrates the birth of the sailor every spring. Sohar was once known as the ‘Gateway to China’. Reaffirming its cultural ties, in 1980 a replica of a ninth-century Arab dhow named ‘The Sohar’, sailed from Sohar to China, tracing the journey that was said to have been undertaken by the legendary Omani voyager, Sindbad.

Salalah

Salalah is the third-largest city in the Sultanate of Oman, and the largest city in the Dhofar province. The region has been one of the most important producers of high quality frankincense in the world since ancient times and remains so today. Salalah is known as the perfume capital of Arabia due to the abundant display of frankincense trees lining the paths through the mountains.

Salalah, located in the southern part of Oman, is a city that experiences a unique natural phenomenon known as the Khareef season. The season is characterized by lush green landscapes, cooler temperatures, and drizzles of rain. It usually begins in late June and continues until early September, attracting thousands of tourists from all over the world. As well as its lush green pastures, Salalah is renowned for its stunning collection of beaches, which feel Caribbean with their coconut trees and relaxed vibe.

Salalah has excellent hotels, beaches and spa resorts for those who like to spoil and indulge themselves.

Nizwa

Located in the heart of Oman, Nizwa is a city of timeless beauty, allowing visitors to explore its hidden gems. With its rich and cultural heritage, it is a city that provides travelers with a unique and authentic experience, showcasing Oman's traditional and historical side. Nizwa has a rich history dating back to the 6th century, when it was an important center for trade and commerce.

Nizwa was also an important center of Islamic learning during this period, with many of the city's residents being renowned scholars and intellectuals. In Oman, Islam developed its own form - the Ibadiyah. This school of law, which dates back to the year 700 is democratic in its basic features and characterized by great peaceableness. In addition, Nizwa became the country's capital in the 7th century, and it played an important role in the country's politics, culture, and religion.

Built in the 17th century, the massive Nizwa Fort was a formidable stronghold, with its high-walled chambers and huge central tower. Nizwa Souq, located in the heart of Nizwa, is one of Oman's most vibrant and historic markets. It is a must-see for those interested in traditional Arabic culture, history, and shopping. If you are looking for a unique experience during your trip to Oman, then you must visit Friday Nizwa Goat Market. This vibrant market is a great place to explore the culture and traditions of Oman, as well as to get a taste of the local cuisine.

Sur

Located less than two hours from Muscat, Sur is a great place to visit thanks to its rich cultural heritage. Sur has been an important town for sailors and trade with East Africa and India since the sixth century given its position on the coastal waters of the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean.

Sur is home to the last remaining Dhow yard in Oman, where visitors have the unique chance to witness how traditional Dhows are made by hand.

Sur is most famous for its sea turtles which nest along the beaches of Ras Al Jinz.

It is truly an eye-opening and magical experience to see how a sea turtle crawls onto the beach to dig a deep pit and lay over a hundred eggs. It is equally amazing to witness their hatchlings appear from under the sand and frantically scramble their way to the sea, to begin their journey in life. Peak turtle season in Oman usually runs from June to September. Usually, visitors during the peak period can see 100+ turtles nesting. Unfortunately, nothing is guaranteed in the wild, but on most occasions, you can see a couple of turtles throughout the year.
